When you get around to IV, be sure to play one of the updated versions with bonus dungeons. It allows you to use party members that were left behind forever in the original and is altogether an improvement over the original. And after you play it, play The After Years, because it's a great sequel.
I’m planning on playing the pixel remasters of I-VI just because they’re the most accessible to me. I’m assuming these are the most updated? If not I’ll have to look into maybe pivoting to see some of this content!
I think the Complete Collection has all the stuff in it; I'm not sure the pixel remaster does. It's too bad, because Complete Collection has The After Years and the third game called Interlude that bridges IV and The After Years.
Good luck. Definitely play the Dawn of Souls versions of FF1 and FF2. The NES version of FF3 will be rough. I have a bunch of holes in my FF series completion as well. I’d love to play them all some day. I’ve only played FF1 and FF4-FF10 to completion.

This is such an interesting project! The FF series is full of a bunch of gems so I look forward to seeing how this goes. For me I may sound pretty cliche because everyone likes final fantasy 7 but the world, characters and story is very rich I feel this way for both the original and remakes. I think you would definitely enjoy 7 alongside 8,9,10 as well!
I’m excited to see it for the first time! I know enough about FF7 but I don’t know how you can dodge spoilers on that game at this point. I’m really excited to see them proper!

That's a cool project. My friend just started getting into RPGs, and I suggested he start with FFVI and then pick and choose which he might like. Playing from the beginning will allow you to see the development of the series, but it also might be a slog, depending on which versions you play. It sounds like a great experience, though, and I look forward to hearing how it goes!
What are you going to do about FFXI and FFXIV? You can't really "finish" those, and they aren't like the other games anyway.
Thanks! I really want to see what the series has to offer from the jump and see the growth over time. I’m not completely blind in some of the mechanical changes so I have some theories on how I think it might go.
XI and XIV I think are going to be two of the ones I play completely out of sequence. I’ve dabbled a little with XIV so I’m familiar with how the game plays somewhat but I want to give it a proper chance and like you said I can’t exactly “finish” them either. I think I’ll give myself a certain amount of time with each to see how I feel about them and share my thoughts. Tho I’m totally open to ideas they’re at least a ways away now haha
They're the only two mainline games that I skipped without giving them a chance, mostly because I'm cheap and don't want to pay subscription fees. I hear that FFXI is going free-to-play up until level 75 (?), so I might give that a try, but we'll have to see.
I don’t necessarily mind a subscription fee but I think the time sink is going to be the problem for me. I’ve heard good things about some of the story parts of the later FFXIV expansions so I’d like to give those a proper shot- but I don’t think I’d feel good taking a year on one game just to get my feelings together on it. The more I think on it the more I might dabble for an initial impression and then do a deep dive at the end. It would be nice to not have to pay to play XI tho!
I don't know if it's just advertising, but I keep seeing things about FFXIV that make it sound like the best-written story ever in gaming. And yeah, if you're not power-gaming, will you even make it to the later expansions in a year?

I still have them for the PlayStation and PS2 all the way up to FF XII, I think, but I've only ever played VII and VIII. Maybe I should join you.
